Bathing Beauties

Oh, my hens love the dirt!

When they are let out of the coop, at first they forage and wander about the yard, but then they succumb to digging holes in the garden and planting themselves in them.

They will nestle down in a depression in the dirt like a cat hunkers down in the center of a fuzzy blanket.

Happy hens!

  1. My daughter has a small farm, she has horses, sheep, etc, but she also has a lot of chickens .I love taking photos of them as they are beautiful and there is nothing like a real fresh egg from a truly free range happy chicken for breakfast.
    Lovely photos of your chickens.

  2. I completely agree with you about the eggs -- there's no contest between the sad, anemic store-bought ones and the ones a happy barnyard hen will lay. It's also surprising how endearing a chicken can be. When I open the gate of their coop, there's one small buff hen who's decided she's my pet and will always come right to me as the other hens race towards the compost heap. She'll amble after me around the yard as I work, sort of like a two-legged cat... with feathers. Thank you for the compliment on the photos -- I've seen yours (stunning!), so that means a lot. :)
